Visit to the Gunmakers’ Proof House
On 15th January, Liverymen gathered for an exclusive visit to the historic Gunmakers’ Proof House, hosted by the Master. This sold-out event provided a rare opportunity to explore the home of the Worshipful Company of Gunmakers, an institution that has upheld the safety and regulation of firearms since 1675.

The visit commenced with an insightful introductory talk on the history and purpose of the Proof House, detailing its crucial role in ensuring the safety of firearms through rigorous proofing processes.
Guests were then treated to a fascinating guided tour led by Proof Master David Miles, who kindly took time out of his busy schedule to provide an in-depth explanation of the meticulous procedures involved in gun proofing, safety testing, and deactivation. His expertise and passion for the craft were evident, making for an engaging and educational experience.

Following the tour, attendees enjoyed a memorable lunch, which began in dramatic fashion with the firing of a cannon to mark the commencement of the meal, and featured a superb selection of dishes, beginning with a hearty game pie, followed by succulent duck, and a well-received dessert.
Throughout the event, Gunmakers’ Clerk Andy Bignold proved to be an excellent host, regaling guests with stories and anecdotes that brought the history of the Gunmakers’ Company to life. His knowledge and enthusiasm added an extra layer of enjoyment to the day, ensuring that all present felt warmly welcomed.
The event was expertly organised by Steward Jacob Ball, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for all attendees. With space strictly limited, this visit reaffirmed the unique privilege of Liverymen in gaining access to some of London’s most historic institutions.
The day served as a reminder of the enduring traditions and responsibilities upheld by the Gunmakers’ Company, and the significance of their role in firearm safety across the UK.
