Our sell out tour of the Royal Ballet & Opera House on 22nd January 2026 provided a fascinating insight into the history of the venue and a look around the labyrinthine building.

Renowned for its excellent acoustics allowing performers to project without microphones, we experienced part of a rehearsal from the 5th level of the 2,256 seat auditorium.

Many had not appreciated how self-sufficient the theatre is. All costumes are made and repaired on site. We delighted at the grace yet strength of the ballerinas undertaking compulsory daily exercise classes.

We concluded with an exclusive talk and Q&A session by Assist. Technical Director Stuart Robinson who outlined what it takes to put on a major opera or ballet.

Scenery is controlled by technicians, using computer controlled winches. An array of technical, and facilities staff are employed and the RBO is a significant trainer of apprentices in an array of trades including many female engineers.

Over lunch, Members commented on how much they enjoyed the visit and meeting members who do not often book. We encourage more members to come and make new friends.
