“Talking Heads” Interview with The Master, Charles Brooks, and Past Master Paul Nash

A special feature-length film brings together The Master, Charles Brooks, and Past Master Paul Nash in a wide-ranging conversation about the traditions, purpose and people of the Worshipful Company of Plumbers.

Filmed as part of our ongoing heritage, this 3-minute introduction and full 20-minute interview explores the rich legacy of the Livery Companies, their role in London’s history, and the modern-day mission of the Plumbers’ Company — from its charitable work to its support for apprentices, the water industry, the Lord Mayor and the enduring spirit of Fellowship.

“Talking Heads” – A 3-Minute Introduction with The Master, Charles Brooks, and Past Master Paul Nash

In this engaging and personal exchange, Charles Brooks and Paul Nash reflect on their own journeys into the Company, how they were Clothed in the Livery, and what it means to serve as Master.

Charles, who joined in 2011 through his professional background as a solicitor working with the CIPHE, first connected with the Company through his legal work supporting the plumbing and heating industry. That involvement soon sparked a deeper appreciation for the Plumbers’ craft and values. He gradually stepped forward as Renter Warden, Upper Warden, and now Master, with great pride in representing a Livery Company rooted in history and service.

He reflects on some of his most memorable experiences — especially having the honour of presenting handcrafted lead planters to Their Majesties The King and Queen as part of the Coronation celebrations, a special commission delivered through the Plumbing Workshop Trust, and installed at Sandringham House.

Other highlights include visiting schools to support plumbing education — most notably, a moving visit to Treloar’s School in Alton, where 170 students with severe physical disabilities are supported by over 800 dedicated staff and volunteers. Charles and Mistress Plumber Penny Brooks joined the Lord Mayor and other Livery Masters to witness the School’s incredible work, including a fundraising Gala Dinner at Mansion House that raised over £135,000.

Charles also led a visit to Mary Hare School for the deaf in Newbury, where students are studying Level 1 and 2 BTEC Plumbing courses. With support from the CIPHE, the visit included plumbing demonstrations by Liveryman Jerry Whiteley and Ruben Duggan, our WorldSkills 2024 silver medallist, as well as a career talk by Liveryman Jason Clark, inspiring students through his journey from apprentice to business leader. The event was so well received, the School has requested future visits from the Company.

He also reflects fondly on forming part of the Guard of Honour at St Paul’s Cathedral for the United Guilds Service, an historic and symbolic moment representing the Company and supporting the City of London.

His wife, Penny Brooks, the Mistress Plumber, has also greatly enjoyed her involvement, attending numerous events, proudly representing the Company, and playing a vital part in what both describe as the Plumbers’ family. This sentiment is echoed by Paul Nash and his consort Sue, who described their experience as busy but deeply enjoyable — and agree that the warmth and camaraderie of the Company is like no other.

Paul Nash, who previously served as Clerk before becoming Master, discusses his path to office and the importance of truly understanding how the Company works — from its charitable aims to its support of the Lord Mayor and wider City of London. He describes it as “an honour and a privilege I wouldn’t miss for the world”, and emphasises the social heart of the Company, from fellowship events to historic experiences such as viewing the Plumbers’ original documents, some of which date back over 660 years.

Together, Charles and Paul celebrate the Plumbers’ openness to professionals from all walks of life, recognising the valuable skills and contributions each new member brings. They also speak of the role of CIPHE, which maintains the Register of Plumbers, and the strong partnership between the two organisations in upholding standards in the industry.

Looking ahead, Charles Brooks reaffirms his commitment to apprenticeship and training, both civil and military, and to championing the Company’s future while remaining anchored in its proud heritage.

This special conversation between Charles Brooks and Paul Nash is a powerful reminder of the proud heritage of the Worshipful Company of Plumbers, its unwavering Fellowship, wide-ranging charitable activities, and steadfast commitment to supporting the Lord Mayor and the ancient and honourable trade of plumbing. It reflects not only on the legacy of the past, but also on the shared passion and purpose that continue to guide the Company into the future.
