Background

The City of London Corporation has adopted a radical Climate Action Strategy, which sets out how the organisation will achieve net zero, build climate resilience, and champion sustainable growth, both in the UK and globally, over the next two decades. The Corporation has committed to:

  • Achieve net zero carbon emissions from our own operations by 2027
  • Achieve net zero carbon emissions across our investments and supply chain by 2040
  • Support the achievement of net zero for the Square Mile by 2040
  • Invest £68m over the next six years to support these goals of which £15m is dedicated to preparing the Square Mile for extreme weather events.

The Livery Climate Action Group (LCAG) was established by Alderman Alison Gowman in 2021 to assist the City of London Livery companies and Guilds in managing their impact on climate change and the environment by reducing carbon emissions and making responsible use of resources.

Timeline

At the Court meeting on 17th January 2023, following consideration of a paper from the Master at the time Paul Nash, the Court unanimously approved joining LCAG.

At the Court meeting on 26th April 2023, it was announced that the Company has become a member of LCAG.

Master David Adams committed to establishing a committee/working group to build a Climate Action Plan for the Company during his Installation Lunch speech on 17th October 2023, when he outlined his key theme as being ‘International & Environmental’.

Our Climate Action Plan (CAP) must motivate our Court, membership, industry & training partners and suppliers to not only drive forward the goals of the Livery Climate Action Group themselves, but also be advocates within their own networks.

At the Court meeting on 23rd January 2024, it was announced that Court Assistant Damon Reynolds will be the official Company representative for LCAG, supported by Liveryman Patty Grant.

Asst. Reynolds presented a strategy to The Court in April 2024 to create a plan by Installation Day later that year. Gaining approval, each Company committee then appointed their own Climate Action representative to the working group. Over the following six months, they collaborated to create an overall plan for the Company, and also an action list for each Committee to adopt, adhere to and evolve over time.

A draft plan was presented at Installation Court October 2024, and obtained final approval in January Court 2025.
