The Newson-Smith Cup 2025 – 19 June 2025

Golf Society News

On Thursday, 19th June, under the scorching heat of the summer sun, 39 golfers representing nine different Livery Companies set out at the picturesque The Drift Golf Club in Surrey to compete for the Newson-Smith Cup, hosted by the Worshipful Company of Plumbers.

We congratulate the 2025 winners - The Tallow Chandlers

They were competing in The Newson-Smith Cup which was first presented in 1936 to The Turners by Past Master Turner and Lord Mayor of The City of London Sir Frank Newson-Smith. 89 years on the 2023 and 2024 winnersThe Plumbers – were not only defending their title but also hosting and organising the 2025 event.

L-R Paul Healy, Tony Peters, David Hannam, Tony Walters

Supported by Tom Agnew and his excellent team at the golf club, David Hannam, Tony Peters, Tony Walters and guest Paul Healy came a credible second on this occasion as well as hosting a much appreciated day. The course, the carvery lunch and the prizes went down well with all competitors….even the sticky toffee pudding with custard – with an outside temperature of 30°C!

All players enjoyed the team best 2 from 4 scores format and Tony Walters also won The Longest Drive on the 18th hole…impressively so as he did not even know that it was the hole for The Longest Drive!

As ever in any golf day there are multiple stories – such as why David fell out of the moving golf buggy; how can birdie putts go in from 20yards and yet we miss short putts for a point! But the fun the fellowship and the warm glow of a job well done for others are the abiding memories.

We congratulate the 2025 winners – The Tallow Chandlers – and look forward to supporting their running of the 2026 event at The Drift.
