The Inter-Livery “Ryder Cup” Golf Competition 2025 – 7 July 2025
The annual Inter-Livery Golf Competition run by the Worshipful Company of Marketors was held on 7 July 2025 in the Marketors 50th anniversary year and the Plumbers Golf Society were there to join in the fun. All the proceeds go to the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.
The day is hosted by Verulam Golf Club in St Albans, home club to Sam Ryder, who famously created the Ryder Cup golf competition, now held between the USA and Europe; the original 1927 Deed of Trust is still displayed in the clubhouse. In the Inter-Livery “Ryder Cup” sixteen teams of four competed this year with the best three stableford scores on each hole to count for the team prizes, plus individual prizes for the best individual scores, and two nearest the pin holes and a longest drive. There was also a putting competition and a driving competition on the virtual hole in the pro-shop.
The Plumbers team of Paul Nash, Captain, and Richard Harvey, Mike Samuel and new member Paul Husselbee on his first outing, enjoyed a very convivial, if challenging day, with the usual team banter and jokes; we’re not known as the friendly company for no reason!
Despite the heavy overnight rain, the course was hard and fast, especially the greens, with a strong wind and a mixture of warm sunshine and clouds blowing through very quickly. Fortified by bacon rolls and coffee and a very relaxed tee-time of 11:10am we enjoyed mixed fortunes and were very pleasantly surprised with our final result.
The day was sponsored by Evelyn Partners, the UK’s largest wealth and investment managers, with some excellent prizes, and very well organised by the Marketors. Verulam’s hosting was excellent, with a superb three-course dinner to finish.
Results were:
Team Competition:
- 1st – City Livery Club – 125 points
- 2nd – International Bankers – 122 points
- 3rd – Verulam Captain’s Team – 117 points
The Plumbers came in with a very creditable 112 points
The individual prize was won by Roby Wallace of the City Livery Club with 41 points and to mark the Marketors 50th Anniversary, the Master provided a beautiful silver claret jug to be competed for each year.
The only prize won by the Plumbers required no competence at all; captain Paul Nash’s name was pulled out of the hat to win a magnum of fine Chapel Down English sparkling wine!
Next years competition is on Monday 6th July 2026. The Plumbers Golf Society’s next outing is our Annual Golf Day at New Zealand Golf Club, Surrey, on Thursday 24 July 2025, where we have a total of 32 PGS members and guests playing, plus some lunch guests as well.
