Amberley Trip Collection – 29 May 2025 Highlights from the Worshipful Company of Plumbers’ visit to Amberley Museum, celebrating heritage and craft with the Plumbing Museum and Workshop Trust.

Led by the Master, the Mistress, and their family, and joined by just under 30 Plumbers and guests, the group enjoyed a memorable day of exploration and hands-on experiences. The presence of the Master’s grandchildren added a heart-warming dimension to the outing, their enthusiasm and curiosity resonating throughout the day.

A Warm Welcome and a Historic Introduction

The group was warmly welcomed by Amberley Museum staff and Trustees, with particular thanks to Stephen and Katrina for their hospitality. The visit began with an engaging overview of the museum’s development and a captivating story about the relocation of the historic lead foundry. Originally displaced by the BBC’s The Repair Shop, the foundry has since found a new home at Amberley, where it now continues to showcase and preserve the heritage of leadcraft and traditional plumbing at the Plumbing Museum & Workshop Trust.

The Company was then split into two smaller groups to explore the site more closely.

Exploration, Craft, and Industrial Heritage

One group visited the Gin Building—named not for spirits, but as a nod to the engines (“enGINes”) it once housed. This building also hosts the Worshipful Company of Plumbers’ Museum & Workshop Trust, where traditional plumbing skills are actively preserved.

Here, members were invited to try their hand at casting lead figures using various moulds, including one bearing the Company crest. Both the Master and Mistress cast a commemorative plaque, which will soon be mounted on a planter made by the workshop for HMS Sultan.

The second group explored the atmospheric chalk pits, learning about the operation of historic limescale furnaces—offering a fascinating insight into the ingenuity and industry of the past.

A Sociable Lunch and a Spirited Ride

Following the morning’s activities, the group reconvened for a convivial lunch—where lively conversation and the now-legendary scones were enjoyed by all.

In the afternoon, an iconic Southdown Brighton Bus awaited. Laughter echoed as members climbed aboard in search of the best seats on the top deck. When the bus completed its round, enthusiastic cries of “More, more!” led to an impromptu second trip—delighting all aboard.

Time to Reflect and Explore

The formal programme concluded with time for individual exploration of Amberley Museum’s extensive exhibits. From telecommunications to transport and industrial crafts, the museum celebrates the very traditions the Plumbing profession continues to uphold.

The Worshipful Company of Plumbers’ visit to Amberley Museum was a joyful celebration of community, heritage, and craft. From casting lead to riding a vintage double-decker, it was a day that truly connected the past with the present—capturing the enduring spirit of the Company.
