Plumbers Lord It in Style – 28 October 2025
The Master’s first social outing, a tour of the Palace of Westminster, was a great success, in spite of her early “Master’s Break”, a fractured right arm. More than 40 Plumbers and guests were given a personal tour hosted by Lvy. Lord Kirkhope of Harrogate.

Two Doorkeepers, Mr J McNaught and Mr P Drewett, were our guides. We benefitted from their in-depth knowledge of the history of the Palace and its operation, including a few amusing stories.

Areas visited included Westminster Hall, where the late Queen Elizabeth II lay in state; the Central Lobby, where any constituent can ask to see their MP, hence “lobbying”; the Lords Chamber and the Monarch’s entrance.

Lord Young speaking
We concluded with tea in a Lords’ committee room. Lord Young of Cookham, a Deputy Lord Speaker, explained the operation of the Lords and answered questions from Liverymen. Lord Kirkhope and Lord Young shared with us fascinating and amusing anecdotes of their time in politics. Lord Young, formerly Sir George Young, served for many years in government in senior positions, in numerous departments, under five Prime Ministers.

The gift shop proved popular! We retired to lunch at the Red Lion in a convivial atmosphere, with much discussion and interaction so typical of Plumber’s events.
Our thanks to Lvy. Lord Kirkhope and his assistant Simon Saunders who gave us all a most rewarding experience.
