Plumbers’ Golf Society – Newson-Smith Cup – 18 June 2026
NEWSON-SMITH CUP – The Drift Golf Club
The Plumbers’ Golf Society was pleased to take part in the 2026 Newson-Smith Cup Inter-Livery Golf Competition, hosted by the Tallow Chandlers, winners of the 2025 event. This year marked the 90th Anniversary of the Newson-Smith Cup, first presented to The Turners in 1936, by their then Master Frank Newson-Smith who went on to be Lord Mayor of London 1943-1944.
The competition was played once again at The Drift Golf Club in Surrey, with teams of four competing in a 2 Best Stableford Scores from 4 format. Following breakfast on arrival, competitors headed to their starting tees. Although the practice range was closed for grass cutting, excellent course conditions and warm hospitality ensured a thoroughly enjoyable day. The Society was represented by:
- David Hannam (Team Captain)
- Tony Peters
- Paul Husselbee
- Tony Walters
Starting on the 10th tee, the Plumbers made a steady opening to their round. Although the team dropped shots on the 10th and 11th, they quickly settled into a rhythm with a nett birdie on the 12th before building momentum through the middle part of the round.

Further nett birdies followed and the scoring highlight of the outward half came on the 15th hole, where the team recorded a superb nett eagle. The opening nine holes were completed at one under par nett, helped by strong contributions throughout the team.

Turning to the inward half, nett birdies on the 1st and 3rd helped maintain momentum, but a costly double bogey on the par-5 5th and further dropped shots on the 6th and 9th limited the team’s progress. The highlight of the day for the Plumbers came on their final hole, The Drift’s signature par-4 9th. Faced with a demanding approach to a front pin guarded by the lake, Tony Peters produced the shot of the day, flying his approach safely over the water and finishing approximately 15 feet from the hole to set up a birdie opportunity. It was a skilful shot, perfectly matched to the challenge of one of The Drift’s most memorable holes.
