On Sunday, 29 September 2025, members of the Worshipful Company of Plumbers attended the annual Sheep Drive and Livery Fair on Southwark Bridge. This unique event, organised by the Worshipful Company of Woolmen, revives the ancient privilege of City freemen to drive their sheep across the Thames without paying tolls.
The day began with crowds gathering on the bridge, where flocks of sheep were carefully guided across under the watchful eye of freemen, liverymen, and distinguished guests. The Plumbers were well represented, joining fellow companies to celebrate London’s living heritage in a spirited display of tradition, ceremony, and community.
The Sheep Drive is more than just a spectacle; it is a reminder of the shared values that unite the livery companies — craftsmanship, charity, and continuity. Alongside the procession, the Livery Fair showcased the skills and history of London’s trades, with stalls, demonstrations, and opportunities for the public to learn about the work of the City companies.
The Plumbers’ Company was proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with other liverymen, highlighting the importance of keeping these customs alive for future generations.
