Huguenots Walking – 20 May 26

10:30 Wednesday 20th May 2026.

The Master and her Consort invite you to join them on a walking tour of the historic area of Spitalfields which will highlight the contributions made by various immigrant communities, with a particular focus on the Huguenots.

The Huguenots were French Protestants who fled religious persecution in the 17th century and settled in Spitalfields.  They had a significant influence on the culture and commerce of the area, particularly through the silk weaving trade.  Our experienced guide Charlie de Wet, formerly Chairman of the Huguenot Society, will escort us, explaining the impact they had in the area’s development and history.

We will also be visiting Sandy’s Row Synagogue which formerly was one of nine Huguenot Chapels in Spitalfields.

After lunch at a local pub that features significantly in accounts of Jack the Ripper, we have arranged an optional visit to The Garden at 120 which is a short walk away onFenchurch Street.  From the 15th floor rooftop garden, there are some splendid views of the City of London and beyond, with the modern high-rise architecture contrasting with the historic areas seen during the morning walk.

The tour will start adjacent to Spitalfields Market at 10:40a.m.  Guests are asked to arrive by 10:30 a.m. to ensure a prompt start.  There are cafés in the immediate area for anyone arriving early who wishes to have a tea or coffee.  There are also toilets available inside Spitalfields Market.

The walking tour will take approximately 75 minutes and will end at Sandy’s Row Synagogue.  The tour of the Synagogue will take about one hour.  Lunch will be at 1:00 p.m. with the optional visit to 120 Garden at 3:00 p.m.

The price for this event is £45 per person.  This includes the services of a specialist guide, tour of the synagogue, adonation to the Huguenot Museum and a two-course lunch.  Drinks are not included but a cash bar will be available. Entry to The Garden at 120 is free but we have booked a group visit to ensure everyone can have access.  Further details about the tour and menu choices will be sent to those who have booked nearer the time.

Numbers for this event are limited to 25 so please book early to avoid disappointment. Bookings will close on 11 May. Please also note that although the area is largely flat, this is a walking tour and suitable footwear is recommended.
